marklaw.Immigrant Nation: Something that Affects Us All

marklaw.Immigrant Nation: Something that Affects Us All: First, deferred action, the program that allows people to stay who came as children is a temporary measure only.  It just procures a work permit for two years, with the chance of an extension. More importantly, because the program came about by executive decree, so to speak, rather than via a law passed by Congress, it can easily be terminated by a president who is not so friendly to immigration as is Mr. O.

  1. As to the wider issue - the current system does in fact allow the individual to come into play. The green card/citizenship application process currently involves submitting lots of forms and evidence to show the applicant is a good person, etc. Background checks are also carried out to eliminate "baddies" - the criminals, etc.

  2. Denying citizenship to illegals is a questionable remedy. There are a lot of exceptions now to that idea - people who came here illegally and were granted political asylum, people who had certain applications filed on or before April 30, 2001, spouses, children and parents of US citizens who came legally but fell out of status - all can now get green cards and later citizenship. So why deny that benefit to the beneficiaries of a new amnesty? A fine might be a more appropriate "punishment".
